Frozen Dinosaur Eggs Sensory Play Activity

Making frozen dinosaur eggs was a fun hands on activity for me to do with my son. He loved helping me put the small dinosaur figures inside the balloons and filling them up with water. When he woke up in the morning he was so excited to find the frozen dinosaur eggs inside the freezer. He couldn't wait to explore the eggs and help the dinosaurs hatch out of the frozen eggs. Here is everything you will need to know to make your own frozen dinosaur eggs for your child to explore!

Supplies Needed to Make Frozen Dinosaur Eggs

Balloons
mini dinosaur figures
water
tray or container to put the frozen dinosaur eggs into once frozen
condiment container, peri bottle, water droppers, turkey baster, spray bottle, or squeeze water bottle to put warm water inside to melt the frozen eggs
salt to help melt the frozen eggs

How to Make Frozen Dinosaur Eggs

The first thing you will want to do is put your mini dinosaur figures inside the balloons. This can be a little tricky, but then once the mini dinosaur figures are inside the balloons you will want to fill up the balloons with water from your sink then tie it off.

Once the balloons are filled up with water and tied up you will want to place them in your freezer to freeze the water inside the balloons. I froze the balloons over the night to make sure they were frozen solid.

When they are frozen solid you will want to peel away the balloon or simply cut off the end and then it will peel away from the frozen water. You will be left with some fun frozen dinosaur eggs. I placed them on a tray with edges to catch the warm water and salt to help with the melting process.

Once the frozen dinosaur eggs are made we loved coming up with solutions on how we could try to get the dinosaurs to hatch out the of the eggs. We first tried using warm water from a condiment container.

Then we tried using some salt on top of the eggs to see if that would help with the melting process.

The salt and warm water combined helped to melt the ice and start to help the dinosaur come out of the frozen egg. If it was warm outside when we did this activity, I would have also allowed my son to bring them outside and use a hammer or mallet to help break up the ice. Since it was winter and we did this activity inside we just used warm water and salt.

After awhile my son was impatient and really wanted to rescue the dinosaurs out of the eggs so he suggested we put them in the sink with warm water. This was a fun transition to allow him to come up with a solution and he was able to reduce the dinosaurs and play with them in the water in the sink.

Conversations and Simple Science While Melting Dino Eggs

Something that I love about doing a simple science experiment with my son is that it really brings on some fun conversations and problem solving ideas.

I asked my son a variety of questions to help him problem solve what to do:

“How do you think we can hatch these dinosaurs?”

“What do you think will happen when we use warm water?”

“What do you think will happen when we use salt?”

“What is another way we could break these dinosaurs out of the eggs?”

“What do the frozen dinosaur eggs feel like when you touch them?”

“What dinosaur did we hatch from the egg?”

We also talked about melting ice and what causes this to happen. We talked about liquids and solids and what the difference between the two are.
